Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy For Breast Cancer.

This unfortunate 45 year old Barrie woman underwent mastectomy for breast cancer of the right breast. She also had a scar on the left breast from a prior biopsy. As she knew early on she wanted to undergo breast reconstruction Toronto breast reconstructive expert Dr. Weinberg operated very shortly after her initial surgery to place a 650cc siltex medium high profile expander beneath the skin of the right chest wall. After several months she underwent a breast reduction on the large, pendulous breast on the left, and during the same procedure the temporary siltex expander was removed and replaced with a 685 cc silicone cohesive gel breast implant , placed submuscularly with an incision through the mastectomy scar. At a separate later procedure the nipple on the right was recreated using a combination of a cartilage graft from the patieint’s ear, and cosmetic tatooing. While perfect symmetry is not possible in cases where there is a complete absence of natural breast tissue on one side compared to a generous ptotic ( hanging) breast on the other, a very reasonable cosmetic result was achieved, and the patient was extremely pleased.
