Rarely can you trace the popularity of a specific aesthetic procedure to a single moment in time, but it may be possible with the Brazilian butt lift. That moment occurred in late 2014 when celebrity Kim Kardashian “broke the internet” when she posed with her back to the camera and showed off her generous—and reportedly augmented—derrière. Suddenly, the Brazilian butt lift became popular at our Mississauga and Toronto practices and around the world.
Between 2014 and 2018, according to the Aesthetic Society, the number of Brazilian butt lift procedures increased by 61% and it remains very popular. It’s worthwhile to take a look at this popular procedure and discuss what it is—and isn’t.
Brazilian Butt Lift IS Designed for Natural-Looking Results
Even though that photo attracted much attention, it didn’t really provide an accurate reflection of the types of results most patients want when they decide to enhance the curves of their buttocks. When performed by a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, a Brazilian butt lift complements the rest of the patient’s body and looks proportional, not exaggerated.
Brazilian Butt Lift ISN’T Really a Lift
The name Brazilian butt lift (BBL) can be a bit confusing because the procedure is designed to augment, not lift, the buttocks. In fact, many plastic surgeons are now calling the procedure Safe Subcutaneous Buttock Augmentation to better reflect the technique used in the surgery.
Brazilian Butt Lift IS Great for Sculpting Several Body Areas
A BBL involves a technique called fat grafting that includes using liposuction to retrieve unwanted fat from another area of the body (such as the flanks or abdomen). This often enhances the results by slimming the waist and flanks and creating a smooth transition to the fuller buttocks. The fat is then processed to separate the pure fat from other debris. This is typically done using a sterile centrifuge that spins the fat. A plastic surgeon then carefully injects the purified fat using a cannula—a specialized type of syringe. The fat is threaded into the buttocks to produce even, smooth results.
Brazilian Butt Lift ISN’T Just for Kardashians
Women considering a Brazilian butt lift often want more of an hourglass shape, with a defined waist and curvy buttocks. In most cases, these patients have naturally flat buttocks and want a more rounded look.
A good Brazilian butt lift candidate wants to:
- Balance proportions between the upper and lower body
- Augment their buttocks without implants
- Improve the fit of clothing
- Minimize areas of fat in other parts of the body
- Fill in areas of cellulite or dips in the hips and/or buttocks
It’s also important to have realistic expectations about what a BBL can and cannot achieve. Patients with loose skin may not get the desired outcome.
Brazilian Butt Lift IS Safe
Buttock augmentation using fat transfer is very safe when performed by a plastic surgeon with extensive training and experience performing the technique. I’ve dedicated much of my career to issues involving patient safety and can answer any questions patients may have about BBL, the fat grafting process, or liposuction at either our Mississauga or Toronto locations. I perform the procedure in a surgical facility that’s fully accredited by the CAAASF, an independent agency that has rigorous safety standards.
