Although liposuction is often associated with the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks, many people don’t realize that the procedure is also well-suited to smaller areas of the body. But neck liposuction at my Mississauga practice is seeing a big jump in popularity thanks in large part to the proliferation of “selfies” and the incredibly visual culture in which we live. Indeed, this part of the body is often the site of stubborn fat that can contribute to the appearance of a double chin, even on people who aren’t overweight, which can lead to feelings of self-consciousness in photos or in profile.
While there are a growing number of non-surgical options for neck contouring, Liposuction’s small incisions and time-tested results make it an excellent choice for the neck. I prefer tumescent liposuction, which is a traditional approach that often yields a beautiful result. For safety and comfort, I use a combination of local anesthesia and sedation rather than general anesthesia on neck liposuction patients. Once the patient is anesthetized and comfortable, I add tumescent fluid to the targeted fat. This fluid causes fat to swell and become easier to remove while also constricting blood vessels for less bleeding. I then use a thin, hollow tube called a cannula to break fat apart and suction it away.
Because it targets such a small area of the body, neck liposuction doesn’t require a long recuperation period. Instead, I advise patients to wear a compression garment for a few days to reduce swelling. Although you should avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks after your procedure, most neck liposuction patients can get back to work and other light activities after only a day or so — a small price to pay for the marked improvement this procedure can yield.
Keep in mind that when neck liposuction is performed in conjunction with a facelift and neck lift, as it often is, its recuperation period will be longer. If you’re considering neck liposuction, I’ll give you a more specific recuperation timeline during your consultation.
