Although plastic surgery patients are just as diverse as those of other medical specialties, cosmetic procedures have long been considered the realm of women. Today, the tide seems to be shifting as more men turn to surgical enhancement, and I’ve seen a recent spike in men interested in liposuction at my Toronto-area practice.
Many men pursue liposuction to improve areas such as the neck and abdomen, where male hormones cause fat to accumulate. (Women, on the other hand, tend to have more fat in the hips, thighs, and buttocks.) The small incisions required by liposuction make the procedure even more appealing, because the eventual scars are discreet. Advancements in lipoplasty, including the use of smaller instruments, the use of tumescent liposuction which can be done while awake, without general anaesthesia, have made the surgery safer and more effective, and made the procedure more comfortable, with faster recovery times than ever before. The addition of ultrasound waves or vibration has caught the attention of the public, upping the demand
As it becomes more socially encouraged for men to maintain their looks, I predict that the popularity of surgical procedures and non-surgical services among men will continue to rise. Procedures such face lift can keep men’s faces looking refreshed and youthful. A strong skincare regimen at home also maintains skin health and quality, and its effects can be bolstered by occasional non-surgical services such as microdermabrasion.
